100th Monkey have two upcoming exhibitions in
Trade City, as partners in the new consortium
Contemporary Art Manchester (CAM).
Trade City is taking place from 4th - 19th July 2009 in the CHIPS building, central Manchester.
Inside the CHIPS building, we will be presenting work by
Chris Butler and
Suzanne Smith. As part of a wider interest in the ideas revolving around sustaining an art practice and an artist's environment, 100th Monkey happened upon Chris Butler's work and, working from this as a found object, began discussions which evolved into the installation seen in
Trade City.
100th Monkey will also be exhibiting at
ANTIFREEZE, an art car boot fair outside the CHIPS building during
TradeCity, hosted by Contents May Vary on Saturday 4th of July 2009. Over 60 artists and artist-led groups, projects, galleries and publishers will showcase site responsive installations, performances, video installations, zine stalls and temporary gallery sites.
Centred on the notion of trade pursued as a livelihood,
Trade City reflects the trading that has taken place between the artists and curators making up 13 independent, citywide, art initiatives. This alternative economy draws reference from and plays off the city's pioneering economic heritage. Through Trade City, Contemporary Art Manchester proposes an innovative approach to displaying the social transactions of contemporary art at this moment. The partners within CAM consortium are unified in their role to programme artists' work, through diverse and innovative curatorial frameworks including exhibition, screening and publication formats. Current partners of CAM include twenty+3 projects, 100th Monkey, Bureau, Castlefield Gallery, Contents May Vary, Edmundson & Quaife, Exocet, FutureEverything, Gymnasium, Interval, Islington Mill Art Academy, Harfleet and Jack, Salford Restoration Office and Rogue Project Space.
